Obiettivi formativi
Il corso fornisce competenze teoriche e analitiche per comprendere le dinamiche migratorie, concentrandosi esplicitamente su questioni di giustizia e inclusione socio-spaziale. Durante il corso, studenti e studentesse dovranno sviluppare la capacità di interpretare criticamente i fenomeni sociali, economici e politici legati ai processi migratori, utilizzando i concetti e le metodologie della Geografia politica e del campo interdisciplinare dei Border Studies.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
This course provides theoretical and analytical skills to understand migration dynamics, explicitly focusing on justice and socio-spatial inclusion issues. During the course, students are expected to develop their capacity to critically interpret social, economic, and political phenomena related to migration processes using concepts and methodologies of Political Geography and the interdisciplinary field of Border Studies.

- Descrivere i più recenti orientamenti della ricerca geografica critica in materia di migrazioni.
- Cogliere criticamente le rappresentazioni che spesso caratterizzano la descrizione della migrazione e dei migranti nel mondo contemporaneo.
- Illustrare la relazione specifica tra i fenomeni migratori e l'ambiente urbano.
- Utilizzare le competenze trasversali apprese in particolare autonomia di giudizio, comunicazione orale e lavoro di gruppo.

Programma
Dopo due lezioni dal carattere introduttivo (6 ore), il programma si struttura in tre moduli, ognuno dei quali prevede circa 10 ore di insegnamento.
Module 1: I processi migratori: approcci teorici e sguardi critici.
Il primo modulo introduce la complessità dei processi migratori nel mondo contemporaneo e le molteplici prospettive di analisi sviluppate su tali processi nel corso del tempo. In particolar modo, viene dato risalto agli approcci teorici più critichi sviluppati nell’ambito della Geografia politica e del campo di studi interdisciplinare dei Border Studies.
Module 2: Politiche migratorie e percorsi differenziali di mobilità.
Il secondo modulo è dedicato a esplorare l’impatto delle politiche migratorie nell’irregimentare le mobilità nel mondo contemporaneo. Questo modulo affronta, tra gli altri, il tema della gestione dei confini, con particolare riguardo al contesto dell’Unione Europea (EU).
Module 3: I fenomeni migratori e l’ambito urbano.
Il terzo modulo si focalizza sulle relazioni esistenti tra processi migratori ed ambito urbano, prestando particolare attenzione ai temi della giustizia e dell'inclusione socio-spaziale.
SYLLABUS:
After two introductory lectures (6 hours), the course is structured in three modules, each comprising approximately 10 hours of teaching.
Module 1: Migration Processes: Theoretical Approaches and Critical Perspectives.
The first module introduces the complexity of migration processes in the contemporary world and the multiple analysis perspectives developed on these processes over time. Emphasis is placed on the most critical theoretical approaches developed within Political Geography and the interdisciplinary field of Border Studies.
Module 2: Migration Policies and Differential Pathways of Mobility.
The second module explores the impact of migration policies in regimenting mobility in the contemporary world. This module addresses, among others, the issue of border management, with a focus on the European Union (EU) context.
Module 3: Migration Phenomena and the Urban Environment.
The third module focuses on the relations between migration processes and urban contexts, by paying special attention to justice and socio-spatial inclusion issues.

Modalità di insegnamento
L’insegnamento prevede 36 ore di didattica che comprendono sia lezioni di tipo frontale (21 ore) che laboratoriale (15). In particolare, vengono dedicate alle attività laboratoriali 3 ore per modulo (per un totale di 9 ore) e 6 ore per attività trasversali ai tre moduli. Durante le attività laboratoriali, il corso utilizza modalità interattive volte a stimolare il coinvolgimento di studenti e studentesse in varie forme. Tra queste, la lettura attiva sui temi oggetto del corso e lavori di gruppo volti a incentivare l’osservazione e la riflessione sulla complessità dei processi migratori. Le modalità di insegnamento illustrate richiedono, da parte dei frequentanti, una partecipazione costante alle lezioni. La frequenza è dunque fortemente consigliata; la prova finale sarà differente per frequentanti e non.
COURSE DELIVERY:
The teaching includes 36 didactic activities comprising lectures (21 hours) and workshops (15). In particular, 3 hours per module (9 hours) and 6 hours for transversal activities across the three modules are dedicated to laboratory activities. During the workshop activities, the course uses interactive methods to stimulate student involvement in various forms. These include active reading on the topics covered by the course and group work aimed at encouraging observation and reflection on the complexity of migration processes. The teaching methods illustrated require constant participation in the lectures. Attendance is therefore strongly recommended; the final examination will be different for attending and non-attending students.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
Studenti frequentanti:
La verifica dell’apprendimento prevede:
- La valutazione delle attività laboratoriali svolte in classe (punteggio massimo 10/30). La partecipazione alle attività laboratoriali svolte in aula vale un terzo del giudizio finale. Nella valutazione verrà preso in conto: il numero delle attività svolte, il grado di partecipazione alle attività di gruppo (produzione materiale per presentazione e presentazione stessa), nonché ai dibattiti.
- Una prova orale (punteggio massimo 20/30 e lode). La prova orale vale due terzi del giudizio finale, compresa la lode per studenti e studentesse particolarmente meritevoli. Nella valutazione della prova orale si terrà conto dei seguenti parametri: conoscenza delle nozioni fondamentali presentati a lezione e dei testi indicati nella bibliografia di riferimento; capacità di organizzare discorsivamente la conoscenza; capacità di ragionamento critico sui temi trattati nel corso dell’insegnamento. Nella valutazione complessiva si terrà inoltre conto della qualità dell’esposizione (competenza nell’impiego del lessico specialistico, efficacia, linearità).
Studenti non-frequentanti:
La verifica dell’apprendimento prevede un esame orale sui testi accademici indicati in bibliografia. Nella valutazione si terrà conto delle conoscenze apprese sul tema oggetto d’esame e della capacità espositiva in termini di appropriatezza linguistica ed efficacia argomentativa.
LEARNING ASSESSMENT METHODS:
Attending students:
Learning assessment involves:
- The evaluation of the laboratory activities in the classroom (maximum mark 10/30). Participation in the laboratory activities is worth one-third of the final grade. The evaluation will consider the number of activities carried out by the student, the degree of student's participation in group activities (production of presentation material and presentation itself), and in discussions.
- An oral exam (maximum mark: 20/30 with distinction). The oral exam is worth two-thirds of the final grade, including the distinction for meritorious students. The following parameters will be considered: knowledge of the key concepts of the course and the materials indicated in the bibliography, ability to discursively organise knowledge, and to critically debate on the course topics. The overall assessment will also consider the student’s ability to argue his/her answers (e.g., competence in using specialist vocabulary, effectiveness, linearity).
Non-attending students:
The learning assessment involves an oral examination concerning the academic texts indicated in the bibliography. The assessment will evaluate the knowledge acquired and the student’s ability to argue his/her answers (e.g., linguistic appropriateness and argumentative effectiveness).
